Culture Ministry: "Korea Seen by Foreign Media as a Key AI and Semiconductor Player and Cultural Powerhouse"
Analysis of 64,827 Foreign Media Articles Over the Past Year
Shift in Perception: From "North Korea Nuclear Threat" to "AI and Cultural Powerhouse"
"A strategic middle power pursuing pragmatic and balanced diplomacy," "a key nation in AI and semiconductor supply chains," and "a cultural powerhouse with global influence."
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on June 11, major international media outlets described South Korea in these terms during the first year of the Lee Jaemyung administration. The Ministry emphasized that the global image of South Korea has changed; rather than being seen merely as an export-driven nation or a country under threat from North Korea's nuclear program, Korea is now reevaluated as a core nation expanding its influence in diplomatic order and global supply chains, as well as a central player in the cultural industry.
The Ministry released the results of an analysis covering approximately one year since the launch of the Lee Jaemyung administration (from June 4, 2025, to May 4, 2026), examining 64,827 articles related to Korea from 67 major media outlets across 19 countries. Notably, this was not a simple article count. The Ministry utilized various AI techniques—including large language models (LLMs), semantic similarity analysis (embedding-based clustering), entity-level sentiment analysis based on generative AI (ELSA), and network analysis of agenda linkages—to comprehensively measure both the tone of international coverage and changes in the country's image.
The analysis found that international media focused most heavily on the political and diplomatic sectors. Of all articles analyzed, the proportion covering politics and diplomacy was the highest at 54.3%, followed by business and industry (43.1%), economy (40.4%), culture (27.8%), and technology/information technology (IT, 23.9%).
In the field of diplomacy, foreign media drew attention to the Lee Jaemyung administration's pragmatic diplomatic stance. The Washington Post assessed that "South Korea is attempting a delicate balancing act in diplomacy," while the Financial Times described Korea as "pursuing a diplomatic approach characterized by restraint and pragmatism."
In the economic sector, the stock market boom centered on AI and semiconductors received significant attention. Reuters reported that "Asian tech giants such as Samsung and SK hynix are forming the new core of the AI-driven bull market," while Bloomberg, CNBC, and others highlighted that the Korean stock market is delivering the best performance among the world's major markets.
The cultural sector recorded the highest favorability among all topics. The Ministry explained that for 10 out of 12 months, international media reported most positively on Korean Wave (Hallyu) content, including BTS, K-pop, Blackpink, and "K-content." In the political sector, positive assessments of the resilience of Korean democracy were particularly notable.
On the other hand, international media highlighted negative topics for Korea's national image, such as investigations into the martial law imposed by the former president and the resulting political polarization, the Cambodia fraud case, and the Coupang incident. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, labor, and industrial safety problems were also pointed out as Korea's structural weaknesses.
The Ministry analyzed that while foreign media previously viewed Korea mainly as a "country under the threat of North Korea's nuclear program," now it is being redefined as a key nation for AI and semiconductor supply chains, economic security, cultural industries, middle-power diplomacy, and the Indo-Pacific strategy.

We will continue to systematically analyze international perceptions of Korea and actively use these insights in formulating public diplomacy policies, working together to further enhance Korea's status on the world stage."
