U.S. Approves Sale of $300 Million Worth of Air-to-Air Missiles to South Korea
The U.S. government has approved the sale of weapons to South Korea, including medium-range air-to-air missiles, with a total value of 292 million dollars.
On June 10 (local time), the U.S. State Department announced the approval of a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the South Korean government for 70 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and two AMRAAM guidance sections, as requested by South Korea.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is a medium-range air-to-air missile launched from fighter jets.
In addition to the missiles, the sale includes AMRAAM containers, control sections, support equipment, spare parts, weapon system support, and related software.
The State Department explained that this arms sale will strengthen the security capabilities of South Korea, a key ally in the Indo-Pacific region, and support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives.
It also stated that the sale will enhance South Korea's air defense capabilities, help deter regional aggression, and improve interoperability with U.S. forces.
