Mayor Jung Jangsun: “Extension of the Special Act Is a Turning Point Toward Becoming an International Peace City”
Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province has confirmed the extension of the validity period for the "Special Act on Support for Pyeongtaek City, etc. due to the Relocation of US Military Bases in Korea" (hereinafter referred to as the Pyeongtaek Support Special Act), giving new momentum to key regional projects.
Pyeongtaek City announced on June 10 that, following the final promulgation of the amended Pyeongtaek Support Special Act on June 9, the law—which was initially set to expire at the end of this year—has been extended for four years, now remaining effective until December 31, 2030.
With this legislative amendment, Pyeongtaek City will be able to eliminate concerns about administrative and financial gaps that might have arisen from the termination of the special act, and will secure an institutional foundation to stably pursue major projects such as the establishment of Godeok International School and the development of large-scale industrial complexes.
The Pyeongtaek Support Special Act was enacted in 2004 to promote regional development and support residents in relation to the relocation of US military bases in Korea. Since then, the law has been extended three times to ensure the continued progress of the US base relocation and regional development projects, and there have been ongoing calls for further extension to ensure the stable completion of related projects.
In particular, Pyeongtaek has been a representative area that has borne the national burden of hosting the relocation of US military bases, and there has been a continuous need for national-level support for the expansion of urban infrastructure and the enhancement of education, culture, and welfare sectors.
Jung Jangsun, Mayor of Pyeongtaek City, stated, "I would like to express my deep gratitude to the local members of the National Assembly, the Ministry of National Defense, and other related ministries and agencies for their collective efforts in passing the bill through the plenary session of the National Assembly, the Cabinet meeting, and finally promulgation. The confirmation of this special act's extension will be a crucial turning point for Pyeongtaek City to move beyond being a security-focused city and to become an international peace city with a foundation for sustainable growth."
The city plans to use this special act extension as an opportunity to accelerate various support projects and regional development initiatives, focusing further on securing future growth engines and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

A Pyeongtaek City official commented, "With the extension of the special act, we have secured continuity for the implementation of mid- to long-term projects for regional development. We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness as an international city while fulfilling our role as a city that supports national security."
