On June 10, Park Sunghyun, the mayor-elect of Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province, officially launched the "Gwangyang Great Transformation Committee," the transition team for the 9th term of the Gwangyang mayor, marking the beginning of its full-scale activities.
Unlike previous transition committees, which mainly focused on the transfer of municipal work, the Gwangyang Great Transformation Committee will operate as a policy-driven and practical strategy committee. It will provide a clear-eyed assessment of Gwangyang's current state and design growth strategies for the next 10 years.

In particular, the committee will focus on overcoming crises such as changes in industrial structure, population decline, and local economic stagnation, and securing new growth engines by concentrating efforts on industrial transformation, fostering future strategic industries, administrative innovation, and improving living conditions.
The committee is composed of a chairperson, vice chairperson, spokesperson, and four subcommittees: the Planning and Administration Committee, the Industrial and Economic Committee, the Welfare, Culture and Urban Committee, and the Special Committee for Future Strategies. It will function as a practical organization with the participation of experts from each field and support teams of public officials.
Lee Myungwoo, who previously served as the head of the U.S. home appliances division at Samsung Electronics and as vice chairman of the Dongwon Group, has been appointed as chairperson. He will lead the Gwangyang Great Transformation Committee, leveraging his experience in global corporate management and organizational innovation.
The vice chairperson, Yoon Younghak, a former director at Gwangyang City, will coordinate the committee’s operations and facilitate work between the subcommittees based on his experience in municipal administration.
Park Hyungbae, who has served as secretary-general of the Gwangyang Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will serve as spokesperson, acting as the primary channel for communication with the media and citizens.
On the Planning and Administration Committee, Kim Bora, who served as a member of the 8th Gwangyang City Council, will be responsible for fiscal assessments, organizational innovation, and establishing the administrative operation system.
The Industrial and Economic Committee will be led by Lee Kwonik, chairperson of the Yeosu Gwangyang Port Committee, and joined by Seo Younghyun, former head of the basic materials division at POSCO Future M and former CEO of POSCO MC Materials, focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of Gwangyang Port and formulating strategies for industrial transformation.
The Welfare, Culture, and Urban Committee will be chaired by Lee Woojong, former president of the Gyeonggi Arts Center, with the participation of Kim Myungwon, former director of the Korea Urban Agriculture Civic Council, to review policies in welfare, culture, tourism, and urban development.
The Special Committee for Future Strategies will include five members: Do Deokhee, chairperson of the Korea Maritime Policy Association, as well as Lee Jeonghee, Hong Seokyun, Ahn Ikjun, and Hwang Sunwon.
Over the next month, the committee plans to conduct diagnostics of Gwangyang City’s finances and key issues, establish the vision for the 9th municipal administration, set the direction for organizational restructuring, define principles for personnel management, develop execution plans for key pledges, and create a 100-day plan for the start of the new term.
In particular, the Special Committee for Future Strategies will focus on in-depth reviews of the industrial transformation strategy, the establishment of a Seoul National University Hospital national industrial medicine medical cluster, the creation of an AI and data industrial city, response strategies for the integration of Gwangju and South Jeolla Province into a special metropolitan city, formulating a vision for Gwangyang for the next 10 years, and strategies to attract POSCO affiliates’ headquarters.
Mayor-elect Park Sunghyun stated, "Gwangyang is at a critical juncture, facing the need for a major transformation in both industry and urban development," adding, "The Gwangyang Great Transformation Committee is not just a transition team, but a strategic committee that will design Gwangyang’s next 10 years."
