Why a Bakery Created by an Agricultural Machinery Company Became a Hot Spot in Jeju
Greenscape Surpasses 1.24 Million Visitors
Additional Multi-Purpose Commercial Facility to Open in the Second Half of Next Year
'Greenscape,' located near Saebyeol Oreum in Aewol-eup, Jeju City, is emerging as a new tourist attraction in Jeju. Operated by Jeju Daedong, a subsidiary of the agricultural company Daedong, this destination features a 'farm-to-table' model, where food is prepared using crops grown in its smart farm. The large-scale smart farm within Greenscape and the adjacent bakery cafe 'Jejudang' encapsulate this model. Jeju Daedong plans to expand on this concept by opening a farm town multi-purpose commercial facility in the second half of next year.
According to Daedong on June 10, Jeju Greenscape has seen a steady increase in visitors, reaching a cumulative total of 1.24 million just a year and a half after opening. Greenscape is a future-oriented agricultural theme tourism complex being developed by Daedong, covering approximately 693,000 square meters (21 man-pyeong). The opening of 'Arte Kids Park' and 'Jejudang Bakery Cafe' in April and May 2024, respectively, marked the beginning of full-scale operations and visitor reception.
Industry watchers believe that Greenscape has quickly established itself in Jeju, despite the island’s abundance of tourist spots, theme parks, bakeries, and cafes, thanks to its unique concept of an agricultural company directly cultivating and supplying ingredients via its smart farm. For example, Jejudang Bakery Cafe offers menu items using high-functional bio-crops such as 'Igodeulppaegi' cultivated in the smart farm. The signature menu is the 'Igodeulppaegi Single Origin' beverage made from this crop. Breads made from local produce such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots, pumpkin, and corn are also popular.
The new farm town multi-purpose commercial facility will further expand the concept of connecting farm and table. Daedong plans to open the 'Farm to Table' restaurant, 'Farm to Market' retail store, and 'Farm to Living' pop-up store on a 18,332 square meter site between Jejudang Bakery Cafe and Arte Kids Park.
This project is highly regarded for incorporating smart agriculture technologies that Daedong has accumulated over time. In addition to Jeju Greenscape, Daedong operates smart farms in Seoul and Taean, South Chungcheong Province, for crop research and supply. The Taean smart farm is particularly large, covering 2.4 hectares (about 7,200 pyeong). Leveraging this smart farm expertise, Daedong was recently selected as the preferred negotiation partner for the 'National Agriculture AX Platform' project solicited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs last month. The project aims to build a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) greenhouse spanning approximately 21.6 hectares in the Muan area of South Jeolla Province, establish an integrated AI agriculture model, and nurture it as a standard model.

In addition to the public zone—including Jejudang Bakery, Arte Kids Park, and the multi-purpose commercial facility—Greenscape will also feature a Smart Zone and a Private Zone. The Smart Zone will house research facilities for future smart agriculture, while the Private Zone will include a hotel and other accommodations in collaboration with Josun Hotels & Resorts. A Daedong representative stated, "We aim to create a sustainable tourism model based on Jeju's natural environment and local resources."
