30s Man Sentenced to 7 Years in First Trial for Robbery and Injury at Actress Nana’s Home
Threatened with a Weapon and Demanded Valuables After Breaking into Home
A man in his 30s who broke into the home of actress Nana (real name: Lim Jinah), threatened her with a weapon, and demanded valuables has been sentenced to prison.
On June 9, the Criminal Division 1 of the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Kim Guksik, sentenced the defendant, Mr. Kim (34), to seven years in prison on charges of robbery with bodily injury. The court stated, "Considering the seriousness of the defendant's act of breaking into a private home at night armed with a weapon—when peace should be expected—a corresponding punishment is necessary." The ruling further noted, "The victims have expressed both psychological and physical suffering and desire punishment. Taking into account that the defendant's crime was attempted, and that the weapon in his possession does not appear to have been intended for causing injury, the sentence was determined accordingly."
During the trial, Mr. Kim claimed he did not have a weapon and had no intent to commit the crime. However, the court rejected this, stating, "The victims gave specific and consistent testimony about the possession of a weapon," and noted, "There is a record of the defendant searching for information about punishment related to the possession of a weapon before handing over his mobile phone to the police." Other claims, including the absence of fingerprints on the weapon, the alleged settlement and persuasion involving 40 million won, and the checking of the resident registration card, were also not accepted.
On the other hand, the court recognized Nana's actions that caused injury to Mr. Kim as legitimate self-defense. The court explained, "It is reasonable to conclude that the victim used her fists and a weapon either to avoid serious harm from the defendant or to protect her family, and that the defendant was aware he might encounter such resistance."
Mr. Kim was indicted on charges of attempted robbery after breaking into Nana’s home in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, around 6 p.m. on November 15 last year, wielding a weapon, threatening the mother and daughter by choking them, and demanding valuables, but ultimately failing in his attempt.
