Steel Industry Accelerates Shift to Low-Carbon, High Value-Added Production... Government to Support Hydrogen-Based Steelmaking
The 27th Steel Day Commemoration Held
31 Honorees Recognized for Contributions to the Steel Industry
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on June 9 that it would hold the 27th Steel Day commemoration event at Lotte Hotel World in Seoul.
Steel Day has been held annually since 2000 to commemorate June 9, 1973, when the first molten iron was produced from the blast furnace at POSCO's Pohang Steelworks. On this day, the event will be attended by Deputy Minister Moon Sinhak of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Jang Inhwa, Chairman of the Korea Iron and Steel Association, and about 250 steel industry officials.
During the event, government awards will be conferred on 31 individuals for their contributions to the development of the steel industry. Hoon Park, CEO of Husteel, will receive the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in recognition of his efforts to advance steel pipe technology, pioneer overseas markets, and revitalize the regional economy. Kim Donghee, Executive Vice President of POSCO, will be awarded the Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit for enhancing the competitiveness of the steel industry through labor-management cooperation and improvements in the working environment. Kim Donghoon, Executive Vice President of Koryo Steel, will receive the Industrial Service Medal for securing original technologies in the special steel wire sector and improving productivity.
The Presidential Citation will be awarded to Kim Yonghee, Executive Director at Hyundai Steel, for contributions to the advancement of mass production of high-grade automotive steel sheets and the establishment of carbon reduction process technology. The Prime Minister's Citation will go to Jinseok Cho, General Manager at SeAH Changwon Special Steel, and Jiin Jeong, Senior Manager at the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology.
The government plans to support hydrogen-based steelmaking and special carbon steel development, introduce a low-carbon steel certification system, and foster companies specializing in processing recycled steel resources. In addition, it will actively engage in negotiations to secure steel safeguard tariff rate quota (TRQ) volumes with the European Union (EU), aiming to stabilize the export environment for the steel industry.
