People Power Party Floor Leader Election 'D-1'... Fate of Jang Donghyuk's Leadership at Stake
Clash Over Responsibility and Retention of Jang as Local Election Results Divides Party
Outcome of Floor Leader Election Expected to Shape Future Party Reform
As the floor leader election of the People Power Party approaches just one day away, competition for the next parliamentary leader is intensifying, and the future of Representative Jang Donghyeok has also emerged as a major point of interest. The outcome of this election is expected to serve as the first test for the party's internal evaluation of its recent performance in the local elections.
On June 9, one day before the floor leader election, first-term and second-term lawmakers of the People Power Party will host a debate, inviting the three floor leader candidates—Kim Doeup, Sung Iljong, and Jeong Jeomsik (in alphabetical order).
The debate is expected to address several major issues, including an assessment of the local elections, the matter of Representative Jang's future, the party's innovation roadmap for the next 100 days, and strategies for parliamentary opposition against the Democratic Party government.

However, opposition party candidates emerged victorious in key battleground constituencies such as the Seoul mayoral race, Buk-gu Gap in Busan, and Pyeongtaek-eul in Gyeonggi Province.
Differing assessments of the election results have led to ongoing controversy over Representative Jang's future. Since immediately after the election, there has been a split between those calling for accountability and those supporting his retention. Some analysts view the upcoming floor leader election as a de facto platform for gauging party sentiment toward the current leadership under Representative Jang.
In particular, should Representative Jang's leadership become unstable, the next floor leader is expected to take the lead in discussing a potential transition to an emergency committee and in debating changes to the party's leadership structure. Therefore, this floor leader election is being evaluated as a critical turning point that will influence not only the selection of the parliamentary leader but also the party's overall direction and leadership system.
Even among the candidates, there are clear differences in their stances on Representative Jang's future. Assemblyman Sung and Assemblyman Kim are effectively supporting the idea of replacing the current leadership, calling for a responsible assessment of the local election outcomes.
In a KBS radio interview that day, Assemblyman Sung stated, "It is most important to first evaluate the meaning of the public sentiment we received in this election. I hope Representative Jang will accept and reflect on the public's opinion. There will be many more opportunities ahead." Previously, Assemblyman Kim said on CBS radio, "It is customary for party leaders who lose an election to declare their position. That is the common-sense approach."
