Trump Urges Israel and Iran to Halt Hostilities, Calls for Prevention of Escalation
U.S. President Donald Trump on June 8 (local time) called for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Iran. He stated, "Israel and Iran must immediately stop 'shooting'," warning against the escalation of the conflict.
On this day, President Trump posted a brief message on Truth Social, making it clear that both sides must refrain from further escalation. His statement comes amid rising military tensions in the Middle East.
Earlier this year, for the first time since the ceasefire in April, Iran and Israel exchanged missile strikes, reigniting tensions and ushering in a renewed phase of conflict. The international community has expressed growing concerns that this round of hostilities could effectively nullify the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and derail ongoing negotiations for an end to the conflict.
The previous day, in a phone interview with U.S. media outlets such as Fox News and Axios, President Trump also pressured a return to negotiations, saying, "My message to Iran is that since you have fired missiles, now you should stop and come back to the negotiating table to reach an agreement."
He also addressed Israel, stating, "I hope they do not retaliate," urging restraint from further military response. In this latest clash, Iran fired 11 ballistic missiles toward northern Israel, claiming it was retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon.
Lebanon is a stronghold of the pro-Iran armed group Hezbollah, and Israel has carried out airstrikes in the area, citing threats to national security. Following Iran's attack, Israel immediately launched a counterstrike, and both sides have now become trapped in a vicious cycle of retaliation and counter-retaliation.
