UFC at the White House for Trump's 80th Birthday? Lawsuit Filed Alleging "Illegal Event"
'UFC Freedom 250' Planned for White House South Lawn
Plaintiffs Claim "Violation of Ban on Sporting Events on Park Land"
The mixed martial arts event scheduled to take place at the White House to coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump's 80th birthday has become the subject of a lawsuit. The plaintiffs are demanding the event be halted, arguing that holding a private combat sports event on the South Lawn of the White House violates federal regulations related to public parks.

View original imageAccording to the New York Times (NYT) and AP News on June 7 local time, with the 'UFC Freedom 250' event set for June 14 on the South Lawn to mark President Trump's 80th birthday, two individuals—civic activist Susan Douglas and Vietnam War veteran Paul Romano—filed a lawsuit the previous day in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to block the event.
The lawsuit was filed on their behalf by the Public Integrity Project. They allege that the Trump administration's approval process for the event was unlawful. The case has reportedly been assigned to U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who was appointed during former President Barack Obama's tenure.
The complaint argues that holding this UFC event on the South Lawn violates National Park Service regulations prohibiting sports events on federal park land. The plaintiffs also point out that the large arch-shaped structures being installed at the venue lack Congressional approval and that no environmental review was conducted prior to construction.
Plaintiffs' attorney Brendan Ballou stated, "This is, in essence, a corrupt, commercial, and private use of our most sacred national monument for private profit," adding, "That is why this lawsuit has been filed."
The White House responded immediately, criticizing the lawsuit in a statement as a "disruptive, baseless, and delay-driven attempt" to prevent President Trump from hosting the event. The White House also claimed that the event is no different from numerous other events it has hosted on the South Lawn.
UFC has reportedly not responded to requests for comment.
Currently, an octagonal ring known as the Octagon Cage is being set up on the South Lawn for the UFC match. President Trump previously stated in relation to the event that "a stadium with 5,000 seats will be built just outside the front entrance of the White House."
Large screens for broadcasting the match are also planned for installation in the nearby Ellipse park. It is reported that UFC plans to distribute up to 85,000 free admission tickets to accommodate spectators at both the South Lawn and the Ellipse.
