Truck Breaks Down in the Middle of the Sahara... 49 Die in Mass Tragedy
Stranded in the Desert: Perished from Thirst and Extreme Heat
Two Survive After Walking 50 km to Escape
An accident occurred in the Sahara Desert, claiming the lives of 49 Nigeriens who were returning home from a religious event in Mali when their truck broke down. Investigations found that the victims died of thirst and extreme heat after being stranded in the desert for several days without access to water.
According to a recent report by AP, the Agadez regional government of Niger announced in a statement on June 5 (local time) that all 49 victims were Nigerien nationals who were on their way home after attending a religious festival held in Mali.
The accident took place in a remote area of the Sahara Desert, more than 80 kilometers west of Assamaka, a northern Nigerien city near the Mali-Algeria border. The truck broke down during the journey, leaving the passengers stranded in the desert for days.
Among those on board, only two male survivors were identified. They managed to walk more than 50 kilometers to find water, then continued to Assamaka to alert the authorities about the accident, which ultimately saved their lives.
An investigation team dispatched by Agadez Governor Ibra Bulama Issa determined that the truck had departed from Talhandak, Mali, located about 300 kilometers from the Nigerien border, and had been traveling for several days.
The cause of the truck's breakdown and the exact duration the passengers were stranded remain unconfirmed at this time.
The regional government stated, "The situation at the scene was particularly shocking," adding that "dozens of bodies were found under and around the immobilized truck." The statement continued, "The driver, assistant, and passengers tried to repair the vehicle but failed, and after running out of water, they also lost their means of transportation. Trapped in extreme heat and without any supply points, their chances of survival were extremely low."
