KDIA Elects Civilian Full-Time Vice Chairman for the First Time in 50 Years
Namwoo Lee, Former Deputy Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Elected
Namwoo Lee, former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, has been elected as the full-time Vice Chairman of the Korea Defense Industry Association (KDIA). This is the first time in the 50-year history of the association that a civilian has been appointed to the position.

After being approved by the KDIA board of directors on June 8 and obtaining consent from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, he is expected to take office within this month."
The full-time Vice Chairman of KDIA acts on behalf of the non-executive Chairman, representing the interests of over 800 defense industry member companies to the government, National Assembly, and military. The position also oversees various defense exhibitions, promotions, and guarantee projects. However, when the association was founded in 1976 during the military regime, its articles of association stipulated that "the full-time Vice Chairman must be a retired Army lieutenant general," effectively making the role exclusive to retired Army generals, usually Korea Military Academy alumni. In the recent recruitment, six of the seven applicants were reportedly retired military officers.
Nevertheless, grievances within the defense industry had been mounting. In response, KDIA revised its articles of association last March and issued an open recruitment notice for a full-time executive (full-time Vice Chairman). The qualifications required were: △ a person with the knowledge and virtue to contribute to the development of the defense industry, and △ someone not affiliated with any member company. Additionally, candidates subject to the Public Service Ethics Act were required to obtain approval from the Government Ethics Committee.
Industry insiders commented, "The full-time Vice Chairman, who should represent the defense industry, has long been filled by political figures. As a result, individuals unfamiliar with the defense sector struggled to effectively lead the association."

Meanwhile, Namwoo Lee, the newly appointed full-time Vice Chairman of KDIA, graduated from Myungji High School in Seoul and the Law Department at Seoul National University, and earned a master's degree in International Relations from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). After passing the 35th National Civil Service Examination, he began his public service career, serving as Director of Health and Welfare at the Ministry of National Defense, Director of Planning at the USFK Base Relocation Project Group, and Director of Planning and Management at the Ministry of National Defense. He later worked as an advisor to LIG Nex1 and recently resigned from that role to apply for the position at KDIA.
