CNN: Israel Allegedly Establishes Secret Base in Azerbaijan for Operations Against Iran
Deployment of Mossad and Special Forces for Intelligence Gathering
Azerbaijani Government Denies All Allegations
Claims have emerged that Israel has established a secret military base within Azerbaijani territory and has used it to conduct intelligence gathering and military operations against Iran.
On June 4 (local time), CNN in the United States, citing multiple sources, reported that Israel operates a network of secret military bases throughout the Middle East. The report stated that Israel has specifically deployed elite military and intelligence units in the southern region of Azerbaijan, which borders northern Iran.
According to the report, Israeli special forces and Mossad agents have carried out drone operations and intelligence-gathering missions in Azerbaijan. Through these activities, Israel secured a strategic foothold from which to monitor northern Iran during wartime, with some personnel reportedly advancing to within about 96 kilometers of Tabriz, Iran.
Sources claimed that, even before the war with Iran broke out on February 28, Israel had already been preparing covert operations in Azerbaijan since mid-January.
At that time, U.S. President Donald Trump was criticizing Iran's violent crackdown on anti-government protests and was indicating the possibility of military action against Iran.
In line with the hardline stance of the U.S. government, Israel installed intelligence-gathering equipment inside Azerbaijan. Even after the United States withdrew its plans for airstrikes against Iran, Israel reportedly continued independent surveillance activities using stealth aircraft.
However, the Azerbaijani government has categorically denied allegations regarding the existence of secret Israeli military bases within its territory.
A spokesperson for the Azerbaijani embassy in Washington told CNN in a statement, "We categorically reject the unfounded claims that Azerbaijani territory has been used for operations against third countries."
