Jeong Jeomsik Announces Candidacy for People Power Party Floor Leader: "Will Restore Trust and Seek Unity"
On June 5, Assemblyman Jeong Jeom-sik of the People Power Party announced his candidacy for the next floor leader election. Assemblyman Jeong stated, "The most pressing mission for the People Power Party is to restore the trust that has been broken and to unite our scattered strengths. I will restore the party's shaken pride and, overcoming division, stand together as one once again."
At a press conference held at the National Assembly's communication center that day, Assemblyman Jeong said, "Now is the time for all 110 members to unite our strength and reinvigorate the People Power Party for victory in the 23rd National Assembly election. I will become the floor leader who brings that strength together," he declared.
Assemblyman Jeong, a native of Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, graduated from Gyeongsang High School and Seoul National University before passing the national bar exam. He previously served as chief prosecutor of the public trial division at the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office and as head of the public security department at the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. Since running for office in the Tongyeong-Goseong constituency of South Gyeongsang Province in the 20th National Assembly election, he has achieved three consecutive terms. Most recently, he served as the party’s policy chief.
Assemblyman Jeong said, "The People Power Party is currently facing a painful reality, having failed to win the support of the majority of the public in the recent local elections." He added, "However, even amid harsh criticism, the people have left us the spark to rise again. This is an order to warn against and keep in check the unilateral actions of the government and ruling party, and to fulfill our role of maintaining checks and balances."
Regarding the forthcoming task for the next parliamentary leadership—negotiations on the formation of the National Assembly in the latter half—Assemblyman Jeong said, "With the ruling party running amok with its overwhelming majority, the responsibility of the opposition has never been heavier, and the historical calling given to us is equally grave. I will lead the negotiations for the Assembly's organization to a successful conclusion, prevent the ruling party from monopolizing parliamentary power with its majority, and ensure that the National Assembly fulfills its role of maintaining checks and balances."

Assemblyman Jeong stated, "We must resolutely stand against the tyranny of the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party, such as the withdrawal of indictments, which defy the common sense of the people, and become a strong opposition that defends democracy. At the same time, we must be a competent party that cares for the lives of the people and is evaluated based on our capabilities and alternatives. I will prove this with results, not words."
