Practical Volunteer Activities Like Free Haircuts and Laundry Assistance
Various Volunteer Groups Contribute Their Expertise to Provide Care
June is the Month of Patriots and Veterans. With Memorial Day and the anniversary of the Korean War falling during this period, commemorative events honoring the sacrifice and dedication of national veterans are held across society. However, what veterans truly desire may not be grand ceremonies, but rather daily attention and warm comfort.
In Gwangju's Seo-gu district, the answer to this challenge is being sought through volunteer work.
The 'National Veterans Care Day' event, organized by the Gwangju Seo-gu Volunteer Center on the 5th at the Gwangju Metropolitan City Veterans Welfare Center, went beyond a simple appreciation ceremony, demonstrating the essence of day-to-day support for veterans in which the local community actively takes part.
Honoring Veterans: From Ceremonies to Daily Care
For a long time, our society has focused on ceremonies and awards as a means of honoring national veterans. Of course, official recognition at the national level is important. However, as the population of veterans ages rapidly, there is a growing call to provide care and emotional support in their daily lives, which is what many veterans actually need.
This event also reflected the changing values of contemporary veteran support.
Beginning with a performance by the Punggak Sori Art Troupe, the event offered practical programs such as free haircuts, laundry assistance, emotional support activities, and a hands-on experience creating companion plants—programs designed to help veterans in their everyday lives.
The focus was not just on expressing gratitude, but on easing daily inconveniences and sharing moments of companionship to help alleviate loneliness.

A 'Small Community of Remembrance' Built by Volunteers
The event was made even more meaningful by the active participation of local volunteer groups.
Organizations such as the Yudeok-dong Camp, Dasom Volunteers, Sangnok Hanmaeum Volunteers, Korea Master Gardener, and With Volunteers joined forces to offer programs that reflected their unique expertise.
Their efforts demonstrate that honoring veterans is not solely the responsibility of the government, but a shared duty for the entire community.
In particular, programs like making companion plants went beyond a simple activity and provided emotional stability and healing. Services such as free haircuts and laundry assistance were also practical, hands-on forms of support for elderly veterans.
Aging Veterans... Growing Importance of Care
According to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the average age of veterans is steadily rising. As most participants in the Korean War and disabled veterans join the elderly population, there is an increasing demand for healthcare, emotional support, and daily care.
For this reason, recent veteran support policies are shifting focus from simple compensation to welfare and care services.
The National Veterans Care Day event in Gwangju's Seo-gu district aligns with this societal trend. By viewing veterans not simply as figures to be commemorated but as neighbors living alongside us, the community is presenting a model in which direct participation in care is emphasized.
"The Best Way to Remember Their Sacrifice"
The reason this event has been held for four consecutive years is the strong consensus within the local community.
After the programs concluded, participating veterans and volunteers shared stories over a bibimbap lunch. Many noted that sharing a meal and checking in with one another was a greater source of comfort than any grand ceremony.
