US Sanctions Cuban President’s Family... Trump: "Cuba Is a Failed Nation"
Family of Former President Castro Also Included in Sanctions List
The United States has imposed sanctions on Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, his spouse, and others. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that this measure is not aimed at causing the collapse of the regime, but nevertheless described Cuba as a "failed nation."
On June 4 (local time), the U.S. Department of the Treasury added President Díaz-Canel, his spouse, as well as the son and grandson of former President Raul Castro, to the sanctions list.
The son and grandson of former President Castro, who is considered the true power behind Cuba, were also included among those sanctioned. Former President Castro has been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice in connection with the 1996 incident in which the Cuban military shot down an aircraft belonging to a Cuban exile group based in the United States.
President Trump met with reporters at the White House after an event and was asked whether these sanctions were intended to hasten the collapse of the Cuban regime. He replied, "No," and added, "We simply want that country to be a properly functioning nation that can feed its people."
He went on to say, "Frankly, Cuba is a failed nation," and pointed out, "People are starving, and there is neither energy nor oil."
President Trump identified the suspension of Venezuelan support as the reason for Cuba's economic crisis. He said, "For years, Venezuela kept Cuba afloat," and explained, "Cuba endured by receiving money and oil from Venezuela, but now that support is gone." When asked whether he believed Cuba was on the verge of collapse, President Trump responded, "It sort of collapsed already."
