Chu Mi-ae Wins Gyeonggi Governor Race... Becomes First Female Metropolitan Head in History
In the 9th nationwide local elections, Chu Mi-ae, the Democratic Party candidate, is emerging as the likely winner in the Gyeonggi Province gubernatorial race.
According to the National Election Commission as of 4 a.m. on June 4, with 89.18% of the votes counted, candidate Chu is leading with 55.13% of the vote, ahead of Yang Hyangja of the People Power Party (39.29%) and Cho Eungcheon of the Reform Party (4.30%). If elected, Chu would become not only the most re-elected female lawmaker in history, but also the first-ever female head of a metropolitan government in Korea.
Born in Daegu, Chu attended Gyeongbuk Girls’ High School and Hanyang University before passing the bar exam and serving as a judge. In 1995, at the recommendation of former President Kim Dae-jung, she entered politics and was elected to the 15th National Assembly for the first time. She later served as a member of the 16th, 18th, 19th, 20th, and 22nd National Assemblies, and as leader of the Democratic Party during the 20th National Assembly, she spearheaded the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye. Under the Moon Jae-in administration, she served as Minister of Justice, and under the Lee Jae-myung administration, she chaired the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, leading prosecutorial and judicial reforms.

I have always looked only to the people, staying true to my principles and convictions,” adding, “This choice by Gyeonggi Province is a victory for the citizens who desire the normalization of the country and significant change in Gyeonggi.”
