Gangwon Turns Blue... Woo Sangho Likely to Win, Kim Jin-tae "Humbly Accepts"
In the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province gubernatorial election, held as part of the 9th nationwide local elections on June 3, Woo Sangho of the Democratic Party of Korea is projected to win.
According to the National Election Commission as of 4:00 a.m. on June 4, with 93.11% of the votes counted, candidate Woo is leading with 51.41% of the vote, ahead of Kim Jin-tae of the People Power Party, who has 48.58%.
Incumbent governor Kim has conceded defeat. He stated, "I humbly accept the choice of the people of Gangwon Province and congratulate candidate Woo Sangho," adding, "I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the residents who supported me during the campaign. I will never forget the warmth of those who held my hand."
Candidate Woo said, "I will implement each of the plans I have developed for the groundbreaking transformation of Gangwon Province," and added, "I will walk together with everyone, including those who did not support me, with a spirit of unity. I will steadfastly move forward, focusing only on Gangwon."

Woo, who is originally from Cheorwon in Gangwon, served as president of the Yonsei University student council and was a leader of the June Struggle in 1987 during his college years. He later entered politics and served as a National Assembly member in the 17th, 19th, 20th, and 21st National Assemblies. During the 20th National Assembly, he led the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye as floor leader of the Democratic Party. Under the Lee Jaemyung administration, he also served as the Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs.
