As the vote counting for the June 3 nationwide local elections and National Assembly by-elections is underway, Min Hyungbae of the Democratic Party of Korea is virtually assured of victory in the first mayoral election for the unified Jeonnam-Gwangju region.
According to the Election Statistics System of the National Election Commission, as of 11:10 p.m. on June 3, with 32.99% of ballots counted in the Jeonnam-Gwangju race, candidate Min had secured 81.46% of the votes, making his win all but certain.
Elsewhere, Kim Sangwook of the Democratic Party is virtually confirmed as mayor of Ulsan, Heo Taejung of the Democratic Party as mayor of Daejeon, and Wi Seonggon of the Democratic Party as governor of Jeju Province.
For the People Power Party, Lee Cheolwoo appears to be the only candidate virtually assured of victory, in the race for governor of North Gyeongsang Province.
