According to Yonhap News, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced in a press release on the 2nd (local time) that it has initiated a public comment process regarding the establishment of the 'U.S.-China Trade Committee,' a new consultative body to continuously manage bilateral trade between the United States and China.
The USTR explained that, in particular, it is soliciting opinions on the specific scope and types of non-sensitive items that could benefit from tariff adjustments between the two countries to enhance balance and reciprocity in bilateral trade relations.
To this end, the USTR has posted a notice in the Federal Register titled "Request for Comments on the Scope and Operation of the Bilateral Managed Trade Promotion Mechanism with China," with the deadline for submitting comments set for July 10.
The U.S.-China Trade Committee is an organization agreed upon for establishment at the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which took place in Beijing, China, on May 14–15.
The White House also stated in a fact sheet released on the 17th that the creation of a new trade committee to address trade in non-sensitive goods was one of the major achievements of the summit.
This committee is responsible for discussing and deciding on measures to reduce tariffs on non-sensitive items, with each country targeting approximately $30 billion—or about 45.6 trillion won—worth of each other's goods.
Previously, Jamison Greer, United States Trade Representative, introduced the related details at a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) event on May 26, stating that the U.S. government plans to solicit domestic opinions through a Federal Register notice regarding which Chinese products will be subject to tariff relief measures.
In the press release that day, Representative Greer said, "Under President Trump's leadership, the United States and China have established a trade committee to ensure that bilateral trade is more balanced and beneficial to the American people."
He went on to emphasize, "The Trump administration will work with stakeholders to identify non-sensitive areas of trade that can benefit American farmers, ranchers, fishermen, small businesses, manufacturers, and workers."
He also added, "While maintaining tariff policies to protect U.S. economic and national security, we welcome a wide range of opinions on effective ways to expand mutually beneficial trade with China."
