"Not a 'Simple Murder' but Charges of 'Rape and Murder'"
Justice Minister Jeong Seongho announced on June 2 that Jang Yoon-Gi (23, male), who murdered a high school girl on the street, has been indicted through the prosecution’s supplementary investigative powers.

View original imageMinister Jeong stated on his personal social media account that, "Jang, the perpetrator of the Gwangju high school girl stabbing murder case, has been indicted and brought to justice." He added, "Contrary to the initial reports of a 'simple murder' charge, the supplementary investigation by the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office revealed charges of 'rape and murder under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.'
He further explained, "Jang has also been indicted on charges of sexual violence and stalking against a female colleague." He continued, "We will do our utmost to provide psychological support for the bereaved family to help them quickly return to their daily lives, as well as to establish measures for crime prevention and recurrence prevention."
Earlier, the 3rd Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office (headed by Chief Prosecutor Kim Jinhee) indicted Jang on June 2 on charges including rape and murder under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
Jang is accused of murdering a second-year high school girl at around 12:10 a.m. on May 5 on a walkway in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju.

After taking over the case from the police, the prosecution extended Jang’s detention and conducted a supplementary investigation, ultimately concluding that he had intended to abduct and sexually assault the victim before murdering her.
