Jeju Autonomous Police Launch Special Investigation into Illegal Tourism Offenses
Proactive Measures at Kart Tracks, Kids Cafes, and Campgrounds
All 15 Investigators Mobilized to Prevent Illegal Activities
Recently, a tragic accident occurred at a leisure kart experience center in Jeju, where a child suffered a severe injury resulting in the partial amputation of their tongue due to a collision. In the wake of this incident, the Jeju Autonomous Police have launched an intensive, large-scale investigation ahead of the summer peak season to root out safety negligence and illegal business activities at multi-use tourist facilities.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Agency announced on June 2 that it will conduct a comprehensive “Special Crackdown on Tourism Offenses” from June 4 to 18, over a two-week period. The initiative aims to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists and to foster a clean tourism environment.
The Autonomous Police Agency will deploy four inspection teams, comprising a total of 15 investigators, across Jeju City and Seogwipo City. These teams will conduct thorough checks for violations such as failure to carry out safety inspections, unreported theme parks and rest area restaurants, unregistered camping sites, and the absence of individual sewage treatment facilities. The crackdown will cover breaches of the Tourism Promotion Act, the Food Sanitation Act, and the Sewerage Act in a detailed and comprehensive manner.
For businesses found in violation during this joint special inspection with related agencies, strong criminal charges and administrative actions will be imposed in accordance with a zero-tolerance policy.
Hyeong Cheongdo, head of investigations at the Autonomous Police Agency, stated, “Preventing child safety accidents and preserving Jeju’s clean environment are core missions of the Autonomous Police. Through proactive, planned investigations, we will block risk factors in advance, prevent the recurrence of illegal activities, and establish a trustworthy tourism environment in Jeju.”
This special crackdown goes beyond routine guidance activities. It is significant in that it represents a proactive, planned investigation utilizing judicial police authority to address safety accidents caused by loose safety management and illegal, unregistered business operations, which are essentially man-made disasters.

In particular, by preemptively blocking safety hazards that directly threaten the lives and physical well-being of family tourists with children—such as the recent kart track accident—this initiative is expected to serve as a substantial supplementary measure for restoring trust in Jeju’s tourism market, which has recently faced a crisis due to soaring prices and reputational damage.
