Boryung Finalizes Taxotere Acquisition Agreement... Official Launch of Global Sales
Boryung Co., Ltd. announced on the 2nd that it has completed the global business acquisition agreement for Taxotere (ingredient: docetaxel) with Sanofi, which was signed last year, and has officially commenced global sales of Taxotere. From this month, Taxotere sales will be directly reflected in Boryung’s performance.
Through last year’s acquisition agreement, Boryung secured overall global business rights for Taxotere—including sales, distribution, regulatory approval, manufacturing, and trademark rights—across 19 countries and regions, including Korea, China, Germany, Spain, Latin America, and the Middle East. The final contract size is up to approximately 170 million euros (about 279.6 billion won). A Boryung official stated, “At the time of signing the contract last year, the payment was adjusted based on the method previously agreed upon, reflecting each country’s inventory status, and the agreed amount reflected a decrease of about 5 million euros from the maximum of 175 million euros.”
Taxotere is the original cytotoxic anticancer drug containing docetaxel, approved in Europe in 1995 and by the U.S. FDA the following year. It is widely used for seven types of cancer, including breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer, and head and neck cancer, spanning from neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy to first-line treatment of metastatic and advanced cancers. In particular, it serves as a key drug in combination regimens with immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Docetaxel is also listed as a WHO essential medicine.
This marks the first time that a Korean pharmaceutical company has acquired the entire original anticancer drug business from a global big pharma and directly launched global sales. Boryung had previously acquired the domestic businesses of Gemzar in 2020 and Alimta in 2022, continuing its business growth. With the launch of Taxotere sales, Boryung is now fully operational in the global cytotoxic anticancer drug business.

Sungjin Kim, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Boryung, stated, “The acquisition of the Taxotere business is not simply the purchase of an old anticancer product. We clearly identified opportunities in both supply and demand, and Boryung has transformed into a company that directly oversees the approval, quality, production, and distribution of globally essential anticancer drugs. With the completion of this acquisition, Boryung has joined the global essential anticancer drug supply chain and will continue to expand its position as a major global supplier, using Taxotere as a foothold.”
