After Iran Announces Suspension of Talks, Trump Says "Talks with Iran Moving Very Quickly"
Trump Posts on Social Media After Reports of Iran Cutting Off Communication with the US
After reports emerged that Iran would suspend negotiations with the United States in protest against Israel's expansion of ground operations in Lebanon, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on June 1 (local time) that ceasefire talks with Iran were underway.
On the afternoon of June 1, President Trump stated on Truth Social, a social networking service, "Talks with Iran are moving very quickly."
Concerns have grown that the ceasefire negotiations could be jeopardized, as the United States and Iran exchanged attacks over the past 24 hours, escalating military tensions.
According to The New York Times on this day, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement saying that it had struck radar and command facilities in southern Iran over the weekend. The U.S. military explained that this attack was a retaliatory measure for Iran’s downing of a U.S. drone. Fighter jets were used to strike Iranian air defense systems and other military facilities.
In response, Iranian state media reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had carried out retaliatory attacks targeting the military bases the United States used to attack communication facilities in southern Iran.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in a statement that he had ordered military strikes on the outskirts of southern Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, leading to widespread speculation that negotiations would become more difficult. This is because Iran had previously demanded a ceasefire between Israel and the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah as a precondition for a final agreement.
Iran, via Tasnim News Agency, stated that it would suspend negotiations with the United States in protest against Israel's expanded ground operations in Lebanon. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and chief negotiator, also claimed on social media that "Israel's escalation in Lebanon and the blockade of Iranian ports are clear evidence that the United States is not honoring the ceasefire."
