"Lenient Punishments Led to Disaster": Labor Unions Demand Strict Punishment for Hanwha Management over Explosion Accident
Three Explosions in Eight Years Leave 13 Dead
KCTU: "Neglecting Safety Behind the Façade of National Security Facility"
After yet another major explosion disaster occurred at Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant, labor organizations issued statements en masse on June 1, strongly urging a thorough investigation into the cause and calling for strict punishment of the management responsible.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) stated in its June 1 announcement, "In the past eight years, three similar accidents have occurred at the same plant, resulting in the deaths of a total of 13 workers." The union strongly criticized Hanwha Aerospace, saying, "This clearly shows how little Hanwha Aerospace values the lives of its workers, and that no improvements were made after the accidents."
The KCTU specifically pointed out that after the explosion accidents in 2018 (which left five dead) and 2019 (which killed three), all five Hanwha officials who were indicted received suspended sentences, and the company itself was only fined 50 million won. The union argued, "Such perfunctory and lenient punishment has led to another serious industrial accident," and insisted, "Because Hanwha is a defense contractor, management has hidden behind the label of 'national security facility' and neglected to implement proper safety systems. Those responsible for management and safety oversight at Hanwha must be strictly punished under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act."

The Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) also issued a statement the same day, saying, "Since similar accidents have repeatedly occurred at the same workplace, a thorough inspection of the entire safety management and accident prevention system is unavoidable." The FKTU called on both the government and the company to clarify the cause of the accident, and urged not only special inspections and effective preventive measures at the accident site, but also across all high-risk workplaces handling explosives and chemicals.
