Five Major Automakers' Sales Drop for Second Month in May with 664,000 Units Sold... Only Kia Posts Growth (Comprehensive)
Hyundai's Production Declines Due to Parts Supply Disruptions
The global sales volume of South Korea's five major automakers—Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Korea, and KG Mobility—declined for the second consecutive month in May.
According to industry sources on June 1, these five automakers sold a total of 664,370 vehicles last month. This represents a 4.0% decrease compared to the same month last year. In April, sales had also dropped by 3.3%, marking two consecutive months of negative growth.
Kia was the only one among the five companies to increase its sales volume year-on-year, selling a total of 277,715 vehicles both domestically and internationally. In Korea, it sold 44,713 vehicles, a 0.6% decrease, while overseas sales reached 232,781 vehicles, up 3.4% from a year earlier.
A Kia official stated, "In the United States, we have maintained year-on-year sales growth for three consecutive months, driven by SUV hybrids, while in Europe, our strategy is to expand sales of mass-market electric vehicles in each region. We will continue to maintain sales momentum with region-specific strategies going forward."
Hyundai Motor Company's global sales dropped by 7.7% to 325,473 vehicles, due to production decreases stemming from supply disruptions at partner parts suppliers. However, as the launch of the new Grandeur gains momentum and parts supply returns to normal, performance is expected to improve.
The three mid-sized automakers also posted declines. GM Korea sold a total of 47,081 vehicles last month, down 5.9% from the same month last year. Renault Korea reported sales of 5,913 vehicles during the same period, a drop of 40.0% year-on-year. KG Mobility sold 8,188 vehicles, a 10.0% decrease compared to a year earlier.
