Ministry of Employment and Labor to Focus Investigation on Hanwha Aerospace's Safety Measures for Hazardous Materials (Comprehensive)
Over 20 Members Form Dedicated Investigation Team Including the Serious Industrial Accident Investigation Division
The Ministry of Employment and Labor is conducting a focused investigation into whether Hanwha Aerospace fulfilled its safety obligations when handling hazardous materials in relation to the recent explosion.
On June 1, the Ministry stated, "We will thoroughly determine the exact cause of the explosion through an on-site inspection." Earlier that morning, an explosion occurred at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant in Oesam-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, resulting in five deaths and two injuries.
Upon being informed of the accident, Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Young-hoon immediately dispatched the Director General of the Industrial Safety and Health Bureau and the Chief of the Industrial Safety and Health Office to the site, and personally visited the location to oversee the accident response.
Currently, the Ministry has formed a dedicated investigation team of more than 20 members, including the Serious Industrial Accident Investigation Division of the Daejeon Employment and Labor Office and labor inspectors from the Center for the Prevention of Serious Industrial Accidents, to launch a full-scale investigation.
The Ministry plans to rigorously investigate whether Hanwha Aerospace properly fulfilled its safety obligations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act regarding the handling of hazardous materials, as well as its obligation to secure safety and health under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
So far, it is presumed that the explosion of unknown cause occurred while conducting gunpowder cleaning operations in the washing workshop of Building 56 at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon plant.
A Ministry official stated, "The dedicated investigation team will work closely with the prosecution, the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, and other relevant organizations to clearly identify the specific circumstances of the accident and determine responsibility."
