Aero K Airlines Surpasses 100,000 International Passengers at Cheongju Airport Last Month
30% Growth Compared to Last Year
Aiming for 2 Million Annual Passengers
Aero K Airlines surpassed 100,000 international passengers departing from Cheongju International Airport last month, demonstrating the effectiveness of its strategy to expand regional routes.
Aero K Airlines announced on June 1 that it recorded approximately 103,000 international passengers on its flights during May alone.
This represents an increase of about 30% compared to the same month last year, which saw around 79,000 passengers. Despite industry-wide challenges such as high fuel prices and exchange rates, Aero K Airlines has maintained its growth, focusing on its hub airport.
From January to May this year, the cumulative number of international passengers on Aero K Airlines reached approximately 710,000, and the total including domestic flights amounted to about 760,000. Aero K Airlines aims to achieve 2 million annual international passengers by expanding its routes in the second half of the year.
Notably, Aero K Airlines' market share of all international flights at Cheongju Airport rose to 76% in the first quarter of this year. After surpassing 70% in the fourth quarter of last year, it has continued to increase its share.
This growth has been driven by an aggressive diversification strategy centered on routes to Japan and China. Aero K Airlines operates customized routes to smaller cities such as Kitakyushu, Nagoya, and Hiroshima, in addition to major destinations including Osaka, Tokyo, and Fukuoka. The airline is also launching irregular flights to Matsuyama, Haneda, and Kobe, and is working to establish a regular Cheongju-Kumamoto service.
The expansion of routes to China is also accelerating. In April, Aero K Airlines received route rights from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for four Cheongju-departing Chinese routes (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Hangzhou), and has begun preparations for service. Currently, Aero K Airlines operates 20 international routes from Cheongju to six countries.

As route diversification progresses, inbound demand, including attracting foreign tourists entering via Cheongju Airport, is also rising. By leveraging Cheongju’s geographic advantages that provide convenient access to Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, and Gyeongbuk regions, the airline expects to further boost local tourism and economic activity. Aero K Airlines plans to continue identifying demand for air travel in central Korea and develop Cheongju Airport into a regional gateway.
