Gumi City Launches Economic Census Targeting Over 25,000 Businesses
The Nation's Largest Economic Survey Conducted Every Five Years
Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province has launched the "2025 Economic Census," which aims to assess the current state of local industry and serve as a foundation for establishing future growth strategies.
The city announced that it will conduct the Economic Census from June 1 to July 22, targeting all businesses within its jurisdiction.
The Economic Census is a national designated statistical survey overseen by the Ministry of Data and Statistics. It is conducted every five years to comprehensively understand Korea's industrial structure and the operational status of businesses.
As the nation's largest economic survey covering all industries—including mining, manufacturing, wholesale and retail, and services—it serves as crucial baseline data for analyzing changes in industrial structure, employment status, sales volume, and the level of digital transformation by sector.
This year's survey will cover 19 industrial sectors and a total of 25,456 businesses located in Gumi City as of December 31, 2025.
The survey consists of 38 questions, including basic business information, number of employees, annual sales, business operation type, and the use of digital technologies.
The primary method of data collection will be in-person interviews conducted by survey staff.
To enhance convenience for businesses, non-face-to-face smart survey methods—including online surveys via PC and mobile devices, as well as telephone, email, and fax—will also be offered in parallel.
The online survey will be available from June 1 to June 30, while in-person visits will take place from June 12 to July 22.
The collected data will be widely used not only for government economic policy formulation, strengthening industrial competitiveness, and revitalizing the regional economy, but also as valuable research material for academia and research institutions.
The final survey results will be released in June 2027.
Gumi City has completed pre-training for survey staff to improve the accuracy and reliability of the survey.
The city also plans to implement systematic management throughout the entire survey process.
Jung Sunghyun, Acting Mayor of Gumi City, stated, "The Economic Census is an important statistical survey for diagnosing the current state of local industry and designing future policy directions," and requested, "We ask for the active cooperation of business representatives when survey staff visit." He also urged, "Survey staff should prioritize safety and make every effort to ensure the accuracy of the survey."
The Economic Census is not merely a collection of statistics but serves as a "health checkup" for assessing the competitiveness of the local industry.
In particular, for Gumi—where manufacturing accounts for a large proportion of the local economy—the survey is expected to provide an important opportunity to objectively assess changes in industrial structure and the level of digital transformation.
