Bangokji, Yudeungji, Cheonmaji and More
Featured in the June Monthly Booklet
Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation (President Kim Nam-il) announced on May 31 that it has published the June edition of “Gyeongbuk Travel MVTI” under the theme “Rest Crafted by Mountains and Embraced by Water,” offering a tranquil escape amid serene landscapes shaped by mountains and water.
This June issue highlights eight of Gyeongbuk's beautiful reservoirs and wetlands, which have evolved beyond simply supplying agricultural water. It explores the forests and breezes reflected on the water’s surface, as well as the legends and history held within these sites.

The mirror-like reflections on the water’s surface create a scene of such profound tranquility that time itself seems to pause. “Nammaeji,” located in the heart of the city, transforms at sunset when colorful night lights and a musical fountain illuminate the calm water, completing the landscape of a peaceful night.
In Cheongdo, “Yudeungji” is home to an expanse of lotus flowers blooming across 70,000 square meters. Alongside old tales of meetings and farewells, memories seem to be quietly layered upon the water. Sangju’s “Jungdeokji” irrigates wide fields and, along the waterside ecological park, vibrant red poppies in early summer and lotus flowers in midsummer cover the surface, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich agrarian culture.
“Cheonma Reservoir,” quietly nestled at the foot of Cheonma Mountain in Pohang, is steeped in the legend of the flying horse. Crossing the 52-meter suspension bridge and the decked waterside walkway brings visitors even closer to the reservoir’s tranquil scenery. Mungyeong’s “Doline Wetland” is a globally rare inland mountain wetland, formed by water pooling in a hollow atop the mountain. Here, otters, yellow-throated martens, and various other wildlife thrive, painting a scene of deep and pristine ecology nurtured over time by nature’s quiet touch.
In Uiseong, “Hyocheon Reservoir (Hyocheonji)” features a comfortable auto-camping site and walking paths set amid nature, allowing visitors to slow down and enjoy a peaceful respite from daily life. At the Dongmyeongji Waterside Ecological Park in Chilgok, which has watched over the fields at the foot of Palgong Mountain, visitors can walk along floating pontoon bridges and a main-tower suspension bridge, encountering both the natural beauty and history of Chilgok, including the five-story stone pagoda at the nearby Songnimsa Temple.
