'20-Year-Old Cellist' Kim Taeyeon Takes Second Place at 2026 Queen Elisabeth Competition
Cellist Kim Taeyeon (20) has won second place at the prestigious 2026 Queen Elisabeth Competition, one of the world's most renowned music competitions.
On May 31 (local time), Kim Taeyeon was named runner-up in the cello division at the winner announcement ceremony held at the Bozar concert hall in Brussels, Belgium, following the Italian cellist Ettore Pagino (23), who took first place.
Kim Taeyeon made her debut at the 2020 Kumho Young Artist Concert and, in 2024, became the youngest ever and the first Korean to win first prize at the Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition. She later swept nine special prizes, including the top performance award 'Grave.'
In the finals, Kim Taeyeon performed "Four Odes to the Tidings of Flowers," a commissioned piece for the competition by Pang Man, as well as Witold Lutoslawski's Cello Concerto.
The Queen Elisabeth International Competition is considered one of the world’s top three music competitions, alongside Poland’s Chopin Piano Competition and Russia’s Tchaikovsky Competition. It is regarded as a gateway for young musicians.
Under the patronage of the Belgian royal family, the competition alternates annually between the categories of voice, violin, piano, and cello. This year's competition focused on the cello division, targeting young cellists aged 18 to 30.
