Lee Sang-il, candidate for mayor of Yongin Special City (People Power Party), has abruptly proposed a public debate with Choo Mi-ae, Gyeonggi Province governor candidate (Democratic Party of Korea), regarding the Yongin semiconductor national industrial complex issue.

Previously, during a campaign in Yongin the day before, Chu was reported to have commented on the controversy surrounding the creation of the Yongin Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, stating, "There is nothing in their claims worth listening to." In response, Lee countered, "If candidate Chu is confident in her persuasive arguments, let’s have a debate in front of the citizens."
Lee also refuted Chu’s remark about "tying on a sash and staging a protest," dismissing it as mere political maneuvering. He asserted, "For the past six months, I have logically pointed out the issues caused by those in power who try to undermine the project to create the Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex in Idong and Namsa-eup," and added, "If you are confident, confront me with logic."
Additionally, Lee criticized Chu’s recent remarks at the opening ceremony of Hyeon Geun-taek, the Democratic Party’s candidate for Yongin mayor, where she said, "The Yongin Semiconductor National Industrial Complex’s construction progress rate is at 40%, and the first Samsung Electronics plant will begin operations in the second half of this year." Lee called this statement "a false claim that reveals her ignorance, since even the site construction has not yet begun."
Lee emphasized, "For the past six months, I have responded to attempts to undermine the Yongin Semiconductor National Industrial Complex project with facts and logic. Compared to candidate Chu, who makes false statements just to win votes despite knowing nothing, citizens will judge for themselves who is more persuasive."
Lee also criticized Chu’s past actions, stating, "When she was a member of the National Assembly for Hanam, Chu opposed the expansion of the East Seoul Substation, thus hindering the development of the Yongin semiconductor industry. She is not qualified to discuss Yongin semiconductors."
He further escalated his challenge, saying, "If a one-on-one debate is burdensome, I am willing to face both candidate Chu and Hyeon Geun-taek, the Yongin mayoral candidate, in a one-on-two debate. There are even rumors that Hyeon is avoiding debates after being overwhelmed in a recent TV debate."
