Chinese Crime Syndicate Members Sentenced to Life for Torturing and Killing Korean College Student in Cambodia
Local Court Hands Down Maximum Sentence of Life Imprisonment
Cambodian Government Launches Major Crackdown on Crime Syndicates
Last year, a Cambodian court sentenced six Chinese nationals to life imprisonment for torturing and murdering a Korean college student in a local crime syndicate. Life imprisonment is the maximum sentence under Cambodian law.
According to a Yonhap News report on May 28, the court in Kampot Province, southern Cambodia, sentenced six Chinese men aged 30 to 54 to life imprisonment the previous day on charges including murder, torture, and organized fraud. As Cambodia does not have the death penalty, life imprisonment is the maximum legal sentence.

Previously, Mr. Park had departed for Cambodia in July last year and was found dead in a car near Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province on August 8, about three weeks after his arrival.
He was deceived in Korea by a Cambodian voice phishing organization and traveled to Cambodia, where he was then detained by a local syndicate, tortured, and ultimately killed. Another victim who was detained with Mr. Park testified to JTBC, saying, "The criminals had firearms," and "I saw them torture and assault Mr. Park with electricity."
After Mr. Park's body was found, local police, in cooperation with Korean investigative authorities, arrested the Chinese suspects in Cambodia. Following Mr. Park's murder, the international community, including the United States and the United Kingdom, increased pressure on Cambodia to crack down on criminal syndicates.

Earlier this year, the Cambodian government began a crackdown by arresting Chen Zhi, chairman of Prince Group, who was identified as being behind a large-scale criminal syndicate, and extraditing him to China. By this month, Cambodian authorities had indicted 1,458 individuals associated with fraud organizations on criminal charges and deported 18,864 people from 33 countries who had worked in these syndicates. In addition, in March, the Cambodian National Assembly amended the law to allow for a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for those involved in fraud organizations.
