"Era of Unlimited YouTube and KakaoTalk Usage"... LG Uplus Launches First Integrated Plan (Comprehensive)
Restructuring Plans from 53 to 18
"Revenue Loss to Be Offset by AI"
LG Uplus has become the first mobile carrier in Korea to launch an integrated tariff plan that eliminates the distinction between Long Term Evolution (LTE) and 5th generation (5G) networks, ushering in an era of unlimited YouTube and KakaoTalk usage. Starting June 1, the company will streamline its 53 existing LTE and 5G plans down to 18, in line with the government’s efforts to guarantee basic communication rights and improve services accordingly.
LG Uplus held an online press conference on the morning of the 28th to announce the launch of 'Simply 2.0,' which simplifies the tariff structure and the entire subscription and usage process. Previously, customers had to select a plan based on network type, age, and specific benefits. With the new structure, they can now choose solely based on data allowance and speed. The integrated plans apply the Data Safety Option (QoS) across all tiers, ensuring a certain level of speed is maintained even after the data allowance is exhausted.
After the data allowance is used up, the speeds by plan are as follows: Data Plan 300MB (KRW 28,000/month) at 400 Kbps; Data Plan 14GB (KRW 55,000/month) at 1 Mbps; Data Plan 95GB (KRW 68,000/month) at 3 Mbps; and Data Plan 125GB (KRW 70,000/month) at 5 Mbps. For plans at Data Plan MAX (KRW 85,000/month) and above, data can be used with no speed restrictions.
Jinwook Kang, Head of Mobile and Digital Business Group at LG Uplus, stated at the briefing, “The biggest change customers will notice with this rate plan overhaul is that they can use data without interruption, regardless of which plan they choose.” He added, “We believe LG Uplus has now ushered in an era of unlimited YouTube and KakaoTalk usage.” However, regarding the 400 Kbps speed tier, he noted, “High-end gaming or high-definition video streaming may be difficult at this speed.”
To address concerns about profitability, LG Uplus said it plans to respond by expanding into new businesses such as artificial intelligence (AI). Kang explained, “Previously, the lowest-priced 5G plan was in the KRW 30,000 range, but now we are launching two plans in the KRW 20,000 range, providing more benefits for customers. We plan to supplement any profitability issues for telecom companies by generating additional revenue through new businesses such as AI.”
Automatic Adjustment of Age-Based Benefits... Mobile and Internet Subscriptions Now ‘All-in-One’
Age-based benefits are also now applied automatically. Previously, customers had to determine which benefits applied to them and select a plan for kids, teens, young adults, or seniors. Under the integrated plans, benefits change automatically according to the subscriber’s age, even after signing up for a general plan. For example, when a teen customer becomes an adult, they automatically receive additional data benefits tailored to their new age group.
Mobile and internet subscriptions have also been unified into a single “All-in-One” product. Instead of signing up for mobile and internet services separately and then applying for bundled discounts, customers can now subscribe once and receive combined benefits for both wired and wireless services, instantly seeing all discounts and benefits that were previously dispersed. LG Uplus is also launching a dedicated internet plan called “Nugget All-in-One,” which offers the same speed as existing internet products. When combined with a mobile plan, the bundled benefits are applied automatically, with no separate application required.
LG Uplus refers to this new direction—simplifying processes across rate plans, subscription, and usage—as “Simply 2.0.” This aligns with the Ministry of Science and ICT’s emphasis on guaranteeing basic communication rights and reducing household communication expenses. On April 9, Baek Kyunghoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, said at a meeting with the heads of the three mobile carriers at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Gangnam, Seoul, “The three mobile carriers must contribute to people’s livelihoods by guaranteeing universal basic communication rights and lead the future of an AI-based society through active investment.”
