Draft of National AI Ethics Principles Unveiled: "Managing AI Technology Transparently and Safely"
Reflects Advances in AI Technology and Changes in Regulatory Frameworks such as the Basic Act on Artificial Intelligence
Public Feedback Accepted Until July 8
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Information Society Development Institute announced on May 28 that they have prepared a draft of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics Principles and will begin collecting public feedback starting on May 29.
The draft carries on the intent of the "Human-Centered AI Ethics Standards" announced in 2020, while also reflecting the rapidly changing landscape of AI technology, societal environment, and institutional frameworks such as the Basic Act on Artificial Intelligence. To prepare the draft, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Information Society Development Institute conducted a review of related domestic and international cases from December of last year to April of this year, and operated an advisory committee composed of experts in each field.
The draft AI Ethics Principles emphasize that "AI innovation and utilization should proceed in ways that can be trusted by people and society." More specifically, the draft proposes three core values to guide the normative direction of AI development and use: ▲ human dignity, ▲ the common good of society, and ▲ technological trustworthiness. To achieve these, six key principles are presented: ▲ human autonomy, ▲ privacy, ▲ fairness and inclusiveness, ▲ sustainability, ▲ safety, and ▲ transparency.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to further enhance the AI Ethics Principles through public consultation. The current draft can be viewed on the AI Ethics Communication Channel website, and public comments can be submitted through the feedback portal on the website until July 8.
