As tensions rise between the United States and Iran over the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for an end-of-war agreement, the U.S. military has launched an attack on an Iranian military base. U.S. President Donald Trump declared that he would not compromise on highly enriched uranium (HEU) processing or the Strait of Hormuz issue, stating that he does not care about the impact on the midterm elections. The United States has announced its intention to maintain the ceasefire even after the airstrike, but difficulties are expected on the path to a full peace agreement.
On the 27th (local time), President Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House, "I am not satisfied with the conditions that Iran has presented so far," adding, "Perhaps we will have to return to military action to conclude this, or perhaps not." He continued, "It seems Iran thinks, 'If we just wait him out, he has the midterms.' But I do not care about the midterm elections," he emphasized.
He stressed in particular that there would be absolutely no concessions on the issues of the strait and HEU processing. President Trump stated, "The Strait of Hormuz will remain open to everyone," and explained, "This is international waters that no one will control, but we will monitor it." Regarding the handling of Iranian HEU, he emphasized that "I would be uncomfortable" if China or Russia were to handle it.
He also pressured Iran, saying that if Iran does not comply with U.S. demands, military operations could resume. President Trump said, "I think they (Iran) have started to give us what they should," and warned, "If not, the person to my left (Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth) will finish it."
These remarks contradict what Iran claimed in its announcement of a draft MOU. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported, "The draft MOU includes the withdrawal of U.S. troops from areas near Iran and the lifting of the maritime blockade," adding, "In return, Iran promised to restore the number of commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within a month." Furthermore, there are even rumors among Iranian lawmakers and politicians that the United States has promised $300 billion (about 451 trillion won) in reconstruction funds as part of an end-of-war agreement.
The U.S. side denied all of these claims. The White House, through its "Rapid Response 47" account on the social network X, countered, "This report by Iran-controlled media is not true, and the MOU they released is a complete fabrication," adding, "No one should believe what is broadcast by Iranian state media."
Hardliners in Iran remain skeptical about the end-of-war talks. Pars News, a media outlet under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported, "There are concerns that President Trump will unilaterally announce the conclusion of an end-of-war agreement," and emphasized, "There will be no agreement until every issue raised by the Iranian side is resolved." Iran International, an anti-government media outlet, reported, "Hardliners in Iran are criticizing Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the parliamentary speaker and head of the negotiating team, insisting that Iran must secure control over the strait and obtain war reparations."
As the confrontation continues, U.S. forces carried out another airstrike on Iran's southern coastal region. U.S. officials told major foreign media outlets that the military had launched a new strike on an Iranian military base deemed a threat to merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first U.S. airstrike on the Iranian coast in three days, since May 25. Previously, Iranian media outlet Tasnim News reported hearing three explosions in the eastern area of the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
