Kyungpook National University Declares Vision as a "World-Class University in the Global Spotlight"
80th Anniversary and Vision Declaration Ceremony Held
Kyungpook National University (President Heo Youngwoo) held a ceremony commemorating its 80th anniversary and a vision declaration event at the university's main auditorium on May 27, one day ahead of the official anniversary date of May 28.
The ceremony was attended by Kim Jeonggi, Acting Mayor of Daegu, Assembly members Lee Inseon and Lee Dalhee, Hong Wonhwa, Chairperson of the National Research Foundation of Korea, Lee Gijeong, Chairperson of the Korean Council for University Education, Kim Jeonggyeom, Chairperson of the Council of Presidents of National Flagship Universities, Choo Gyogwan, President of the Kyungpook National University Alumni Association, as well as students, professors, alumni, university staff, and distinguished guests.
Kyungpook National University was reorganized into a national comprehensive university in 1951, based on its roots in Daegu Normal College, Daegu Medical College, and Daegu College of Agriculture, which were elevated to national university status in 1946.
Guided by the university motto of "Truth, Pride, and Service," Kyungpook National University has continued to grow and currently operates with 18 colleges, 4 independent faculties, a general graduate school, 2 professional graduate schools, and 14 special graduate schools, producing over 290,000 graduates and establishing itself as a leading national flagship university.
The event commenced with the screening of an 80th-anniversary video, followed by a commemorative address from the president, congratulatory remarks from guests, the announcement and performance for the university's new vision, as well as an awards and appreciation plaque presentation.
In conjunction with the 80th-anniversary ceremony, Kyungpook National University also held a vision declaration event outlining a blueprint for the next 100 years.
The university announced its development vision as "KNU: A World-Class University in the Global Spotlight" and set its development goal to enter the global top 100 universities.
To achieve this vision, Kyungpook National University established three key strategies: ▲ Pursuit of Truth (innovation in education and research), ▲ Pursuit of Pride (specialization in advanced fields and protection of fundamental disciplines), and ▲ Practice of Service (co-prosperity with the local community and contribution to the prosperity of the global community). The university expressed its commitment to transforming itself into a research-centered institution and leading both regional and national development as the growth engine of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk area.
During the subsequent awards ceremony, appreciation plaques were presented to organizations that contributed to the university's development, and a total of 102 faculty and staff, including Professor Jeong Byeongho from the Department of Classical Chinese Literature, received long-service awards. Additionally, 7 staff members were recognized with merit awards.
Ten professors recognized for their creative lectures and contributions to education received the "Excellence in Teaching Award."
The recipients were: Um Gihong (Department of Political Science and Diplomacy), Kim Yonggu (Department of Statistics), Kim Juhyun (School of Applied Chemical Engineering), Lee Siyoung (School of Computer Science), Woo Jiyong (School of Electronic Engineering), Lee Mungyu (Department of Korean Language Education), Um Jooyoung (Department of Earth Science Education), Kim Seongdae (Department of Veterinary Medicine), Choi Hyeongyeong (Department of Nursing), and Min Gyeongik (Department of Biomedical Convergence Engineering). In addition, academic awards such as the KNU Academic Award, the Woneam Academic Award, the Highly Cited Researcher Award, the Proud KNU Alumni Award, and the Alumni Association President's Award were also presented.

In his commemorative address, Heo Youngwoo, President of Kyungpook National University, stated, "Kyungpook National University will continue to advance vigorously as a research-centered university in the global spotlight, as a platform for educational innovation, and as a beacon of hope for future generations—transcending its role as Korea's leading national flagship university—by upholding the spirit of 'Truth·Pride·Service.'"
