POSCO Museum of Art Holds Special Exhibition 'A 100-Year Journey of Picture Books'
First Editions by Kate Greenaway and Paul Rand on Display
A Journey from 19th-Century Illustration to Contemporary Design
The POSCO Museum of Art is holding a special exhibition titled 'One Page World: A 100-Year Journey of Picture Books,' which highlights the history and aesthetics of picture books. The exhibition runs until July 26, 2026.
This exhibition is the largest picture book archive show in Korea, providing an overview of the evolution of picture books from 19th-century modern illustrations to contemporary graphic design in a single space. By reinterpreting picture books—where images, text, rhythm, and negative space are combined—as a visual art medium, the event is designed to inspire both children and adults with artistic inspiration and emotional resonance.
At the exhibition hall, visitors can see works by leading figures from the golden age of British picture books, including Kate Greenaway, Walter Crane, and Randolph Caldecott. Rare first editions are on display, such as the inaugural picture book by Kate Greenaway, 'Under the Window,' published in 1879.
Works by masters of modern graphic design are also featured. These include Bruno Munari's 'Zoo' and 'The Story of Three Little Birds' (first editions from 1945), as well as 'Sparkle and Spin' (first edition, 1957), a picture book by Paul Rand, who is well known for designing logos for IBM and UPS.
The POSCO Museum of Art curated this exhibition primarily around first editions, allowing visitors to experience the artists' intentions and the aesthetics of their eras in their most original forms. Attendees can observe the unique physical qualities of first editions, such as the texture of the paper, printing methods, book format, and binding.
The exhibition is free of charge and takes place at the POSCO Museum of Art, located on the first basement level of the POSCO Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. In the second half of the year, the exhibition will also be held as a traveling show at the POSCO Gallery in Pohang and the POSCO Museum of Art in Gwangyang.
