Incheon City Teams Up with Universities and Institutions to Foster Energy Professionals with KRW 21.5 Billion Investment
Incheon Metropolitan City is joining hands with universities and institutions to foster professionals specializing in the energy sector.
On May 27, the city announced that it had been finally selected for the '2026 First Energy Workforce Training Project (Energy Technology Shared University)' initiative, which is being promoted by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
This project is a collaborative effort among universities, institutions, and local governments to cultivate specialized talent based on the local energy industry. From this year until 2031, a total of KRW 21.5 billion will be invested, including KRW 17 billion from the national budget and KRW 1.3 billion from Incheon City.
Incheon Metropolitan City will spearhead the project with Incheon National University, Inha University, and Incheon Technopark at its core. Together with Gyeonggi Province, a wide-area consortium will be formed, including Gachon University, Kyonggi University, Sungkyunkwan University, Ajou University, Korea Polytechnic University, and the Gyeonggi Institute of Industrial Convergence. The consortium plans to collaborate on the development of educational curricula and the dissemination of project outcomes.
The main areas of education will be designed to meet the needs of the local industry and will cover core next-generation energy technologies, such as renewable energy (including offshore wind power), sector coupling (technologies that convert or store various forms of energy such as heat and gas [hydrogen], with a focus on electricity), power systems, and power conversion.
The city plans to focus on nurturing field-ready talent by operating joint curricula among universities and establishing an energy technology sharing platform.
In particular, as commercial operation of offshore wind power in the Incheon area is expected by around 2030, the city will operate specialized programs at each university that either link with offshore wind power or focus on AI-based energy transition optimization. In addition, industry-academia-research projects, on-site training, and employment-linked programs will be organically combined to establish a training system that connects education and employment.
Through this project, Incheon Metropolitan City aims to actively respond to the energy transition demands of major industrial complexes in the region, including the Namdong, Juan, and Bupyeong National Industrial Complexes.
