Hyosung Heavy Industries Accelerates Push in Japan with ESS Projects in Five Regions
Signed High-Voltage ESS EPC Contract for 40MWh
KRW 64 Billion in Orders Secured in First Year of Market Entry
Hyosung Heavy Industries is accelerating its efforts to penetrate the Japanese market by consecutively securing energy storage system (ESS) projects in Japan.
On May 27, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that it recently signed a contract for a high-voltage grid-connected ESS EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project with a Japanese energy development company, valued at approximately KRW 11 billion.
This project involves building high-voltage ESS with a total capacity of 10MW and 40MWh across five regions in Japan: Oita, Kumamoto, Yamaguchi, Okayama, and Mie. Hyosung Heavy Industries will be responsible for the overall system design and the supply of key equipment, and plans to provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services for up to 20 years after completion. The scope of work goes beyond mere equipment supply, encompassing design, construction, and long-term operation management.
This achievement marks a series of successes for Hyosung Heavy Industries in its first year entering the Japanese ESS market. In February, the company also secured a high-voltage ESS EPC project with a capacity of 48.5MW and 228MWh in the Shiranuka region of Hokkaido, Japan. The total value of orders won in Japan during the first half of this year amounts to approximately KRW 64 billion, making it the largest among domestic power equipment companies.
Japan is known as a challenging market due to differing regional power frequencies and stringent grid connection standards, resulting in high entry barriers. Hyosung Heavy Industries has won projects for both high-voltage transmission grid connections in northern Hokkaido and high-voltage distribution grid connections in the Kansai and Kyushu regions of central and southern Japan.
Since entering the ESS business in 2009, Hyosung Heavy Industries has maintained the top market share in the domestic ESS sector. In 2024, the company built the largest single ESS facility in Korea, with a capacity of 336MW, at Korea Electric Power Corporation’s Bubuk Substation.
Hyosung Heavy Industries has also accumulated experience in various ESS projects in the UK, South Africa, and other countries. Notably, in 2024, it was listed as the top ESS company by BNEF, a research institution specializing in the renewable energy market.
