Ministry of Justice Refutes Claims That Yoon Sukyeol Is Using Three Rooms in Detention Center: "Not True"
Allegations Raised on YouTube Regarding Yoon and Lee Sangmin
"Claims of Dedicated Assistance and Improved Meals Are Completely Unfounded"
The Ministry of Justice has refuted recent claims made on a YouTube channel that former President Yoon Sukyeol and former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sangmin are receiving special treatment while being held at the Seoul Detention Center, stating that these allegations are "completely untrue."
On May 26, the Ministry of Justice stated, "There was a YouTube broadcast alleging that former President Yoon and former Minister Lee are enjoying privileges, but this is entirely false. We have been treating inmates according to laws and regulations, strictly adhering to standard procedures."
Previously, on May 23, YouTube channels such as "Bong Jiuk's Off the Record" claimed that former President Yoon was freely using three rooms with their doors open at the Seoul Detention Center, that two inmate janitors were dedicated solely to serving him, and that the quality of food for inmates had significantly improved for his benefit.
The Ministry of Justice explained that former President Yoon is currently using only one single cell, which is the same type as the general single cells. However, to minimize unnecessary contact with others, a partition has been installed, and the adjacent rooms are being operated as vacant cells with no inmates assigned to them.
The Ministry also clarified that there are no inmate janitors dedicated exclusively to former President Yoon. "Janitors in the relevant ward only enter as needed for work purposes," the Ministry explained. Regarding suspicions that meals were improved for former President Yoon, the Ministry denied the claims, stating, "The Seoul Detention Center provides meals within the budget allocated for inmates as stipulated by law."
The Ministry of Justice further stated that, in the past, there has never been any provision of laptops or wireless internet inside the detention center. It emphasized that there is no wireless internet infrastructure within correctional facilities.
The Ministry also denied allegations concerning former Minister Lee Sangmin. The broadcast in question claimed that former Minister Lee received special privileges allowing for extended stays outside the facility, and that a high-ranking corrections officer personally provided him with outside food.
The Ministry of Justice responded, "Former Minister Lee is conducting meetings and exercise under the same conditions as general inmates. It is completely false that he received any special privileges allowing him to leave the cell area. Furthermore, the claim that a senior corrections officer brought in outside food for former Minister Lee has not been substantiated at all."
