Ruling and Opposition Clash Over 'Anti-Starbucks' Movement: "Public Incitement and Violence" vs "Consumer Rights"
Political Dispute Erupts Over Anti-Starbucks Movement
The ruling and opposition parties clashed on the 23rd over the so-called “Tank Day” marketing controversy and the ensuing anti-Starbucks movement. As the People Power Party criticized the ruling bloc for excessively politicizing the issue ahead of the June 3 local elections, the Democratic Party of Korea countered by calling such criticism “Ilbe-style political behavior.”
Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, wrote on Facebook that “the police have put everything aside and launched an investigation into Starbucks. Whenever Lee Jaemyung points the way, his ardent supporters lead the charge,” adding, “This is collective bullying led by the President.”
He continued, “After posting a Starbucks ‘proof shot,’ one actor was removed from a musical, and Starbucks store employees are suffering verbal abuse. What must Lee Jaemyung think, watching the public fight amongst themselves? He is surely enjoying this.”
On the 23rd, a "Resign Jung Yongjin! Boycott Starbucks! College Student Press Conference" hosted by the Korean Progressive Student Union was held in front of the Starbucks Coffee Korea headquarters in Seoul. Yonhap News.

In response, Park Haecheol, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, issued a statement countering, “It is bizarre to see a party that constantly touts liberal democracy defending a company that mocked the very concept.”
Spokesperson Park emphasized, “It is the natural right of consumers to launch a boycott in order to criticize a company’s inappropriate marketing. Likewise, holding those accountable for cowardly and base mockery of historical wounds—such as the May 18 Democratization Movement and the sacrifice of Park Jongcheol—is also entirely proper in a democratic society.”

He added, “To portray the public’s voluntary criticism and calls for social responsibility as oppression and dictatorship is itself a textbook example of the ‘dividing the people’ rhetoric that Representative Jang Donghyuk criticized. The entire nation is outraged by this ‘Ilbe-style political behavior’ that sympathizes with far-right hatred and mockery.”
