President Lee Tells ILO Director-General: "AI Job Displacement a Key Issue... Expecting ILO's Role"
President Lee Jaemyung met with International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert Houngbo at the Blue House on the 22nd to discuss labor issues in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
President Lee told Director-General Houngbo, "Globally, the issue of job replacement by artificial intelligence will become a major topic, and I have high expectations for the role of the ILO. It is a challenging opportunity, and I ask for your advice on what would be a desirable approach for us, especially regarding labor policy."
Additionally, President Lee explained that the Korean government is working to ensure that the use of AI has a positive impact on labor, and that Korea is focusing on protecting labor rights to guarantee the rights of all working people. This was conveyed by Kang Yoojeong, Chief Presidential Spokesperson, in a written briefing.
Director-General Houngbo said, "Once again, I sincerely congratulate you on the launch of the Global AI Hub." He continued, "The ILO is also ready to actively participate in the Global AI Hub initiative led by Korea. Through this, we believe AI can be maximized and effectively utilized in the field of labor."
He added, "I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for Korea's various contributions and donations. Korea ranks within the top 10 in terms of contributions to the ILO," he said, expressing his appreciation.
In response, President Lee requested, "In consideration of this, I hope that the ILO will make good use of the many talented individuals in Korea," to which Director-General Houngbo replied with a smile, "I completely agree."

Meanwhile, Chief Spokesperson Kang stated that Director-General Houngbo invited President Lee to deliver a speech on labor-respecting policy directions and achievements at the ILO General Assembly scheduled for June next year.
