A 30% Surge in a Day: "This Is the Real Next Big Thing After AI"
U.S. government invests $2 billion in nine quantum computing companies
IBM and others among beneficiaries
The Trump Administration in the United States will provide a total of $2 billion (approximately 3.011 trillion won) in subsidies to nine companies, including IBM, to foster the quantum computing industry, and will also acquire minority stakes in these companies.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 21st (local time), the U.S. Department of Commerce plans to support quantum computing companies such as IBM and GlobalFoundries in this way.
The subsidies will be funded by the CHIPS Act, which was enacted in 2022.
By company, IBM will receive the largest amount, at $1 billion. IBM plans to invest an additional $1 billion of its own funds to establish the first dedicated quantum semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States and to create a dedicated business division.
GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor foundry company, will receive $375 million and has agreed to transfer approximately 1% of its shares to the U.S. government. Most of the remaining companies are expected to receive $100 million each, while startup Dirac will receive $38 million.
The Trump Administration plans not only to provide subsidies but also to acquire minority equity stakes in each company. D-Wave Quantum, one of the beneficiary companies, stated that its entire $100 million in support will be provided in the form of a government equity investment. Rigetti Computing and Inflection are also expected to sign contracts with similar structures.
According to sources, this support comes as the Trump Administration is preparing an executive order focused on fostering the quantum computing industry. However, some have raised concerns about the government acquiring stakes in a nascent and highly uncertain industry using taxpayer money.
