CJ Group Requests Police Investigation into Leak of Female Employees' Personal Information
Contact Information and Photos of Over 330 Female Employees Posted on Telegram Channel
Leak Includes Intranet Data, Raising Possibility of Insider Involvement
CJ Group has requested a police investigation in connection with the case of personal information of hundreds of female employees being leaked via Telegram. As it has been revealed that the leaked data included information accessible through the internal intranet, there is growing suspicion that the breach may have originated from within the company.
On May 20, CJ Group stated, "In relation to the employee personal information leak incident, we submitted a complaint to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency the previous day, citing a violation of the Personal Information Protection Act." However, it was determined that this incident does not fall under the cases that require reporting to the Personal Information Protection Commission. Under current law, there is an obligation to report to the Personal Information Protection Commission in cases of certain large-scale data breaches or leaks of uniquely identifiable or sensitive information. In this particular case, it has not yet been confirmed whether such information was among the leaked data.
Previously, on May 18, it was confirmed that a Telegram channel posted the mobile phone numbers, job titles, internal phone numbers, and photographs of around 330 female employees of CJ Group. The channel in question was created in 2023 and reportedly has about 2,800 members. Some of the leaked information was said to be accessible from the company's internal intranet. As a result, industry experts have suggested that the data leak is more likely to have been caused by an insider rather than by external hacking.

A CJ Group representative stated, "We plan to fully cooperate with the police investigation," adding, "We have individually notified the affected employees and are implementing measures to prevent secondary damage."
