Samsung Electro-Mechanics Wins Major 1.5 Trillion Won Silicon Capacitor Order
Signed Supply Contract with Major Global Company
"Strengthening Position as a Total AI Solution Provider"
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is accelerating its entry into the next-generation AI infrastructure market by signing a large-scale supply contract for 'silicon capacitors,' a key component that helps stabilize power in artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.
On May 20, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced via public disclosure that it has signed a silicon capacitor supply contract worth approximately 1.5 trillion won with a major global company. The contract period is for two years, from January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2028.
The silicon capacitor is an ultra-compact, high-performance power supply component manufactured using silicon wafers. It is installed inside high-performance semiconductor packages, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI servers and high bandwidth memory (HBM), where it serves to enhance the stability of power supply. Recently, AI semiconductors have seen a sharp increase in data throughput, which has led to a significant rise in power consumption. In particular, AI server packages are susceptible to performance degradation or errors caused by sudden fluctuations in power. For this reason, the importance of silicon capacitors—which remove noise and provide stable power from a location closest to the semiconductor—has become greater than ever.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics' silicon capacitors have over 100 times lower resistance (ESL/ESR) compared to conventional multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), minimizing signal loss in high-performance semiconductors. In addition, they are designed with an ultra-thin structure based on silicon wafers, which allows for high-density integration, and they maintain stable performance even in high-voltage and high-temperature environments.
Until now, the silicon capacitor market has been dominated by a few companies due to high technological entry barriers and strict customer certification procedures. However, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has successfully entered the core AI semiconductor supply chain, leveraging its ultra-fine process capabilities accumulated in the MLCC and package substrate businesses. Starting with this large-scale contract, Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to diversify its customer base not only in AI servers but also in high-performance computing fields such as autonomous driving systems and mobile devices.
