This marks the first time a Ukrainian drone has been downed in the airspace of a NATO member state. The Ukrainian side has apologized, stating it was an unintended incident.
According to ERR, a local Estonian broadcaster, on the 19th (local time), the Estonian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that "at around 12:14 p.m., a NATO fighter jet on an air patrol mission shot down a drone, believed to be from Ukraine, in the airspace near Lake Vortsjarv in the south."
It is reported that the drone was intercepted by an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force, which is stationed at the Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania, using a missile. This is the first time NATO forces have directly shot down a Ukrainian drone that entered the airspace of a NATO member country. The three Baltic states—Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia—do not possess their own fighter jets, so currently, NATO member countries are providing airspace defense support.
Hanno Pevkur, Estonia's Minister of Defense, said in an interview with the Baltic regional internet media Delfi on the same day, "We received a warning from Latvia's Ministry of Defense, and our own radar also detected a drone flying south. We took the necessary measures, and the air patrol fighter jet shot down the drone."
The Ukrainian side immediately apologized for the drone's incursion into Estonian airspace. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said, "We apologize to Estonia and our friends in the Baltic Sea states for this unintended incident," and claimed, "Russia is deliberately guiding Ukrainian drones toward the Baltic states."
