Ministry of Education to Provide Textbooks to Out-of-School Youth Using 35,000 Copies from Inventory

The Ministry of Education announced on the 18th that, in cooperation with the 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education, it plans to provide textbooks to out-of-school youth.
This support plan was developed by the Ministry of Education and local offices of education after discussions, such as inter-agency meetings, following suggestions from the National Assembly and the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission that support for textbooks is needed for out-of-school youth.
The local offices of education plan to utilize the existing stock of textbooks held by each school. The nationwide inventory of textbooks is approximately 35,400 copies, consisting of 15,400 for elementary schools, 11,500 for middle schools, and 8,500 for high schools. The number and types of textbooks available for support may vary by region.
The eligible recipients are students who are unable to continue regular school education for various reasons, such as illness, maladjustment to school, or enrollment in alternative education institutions. Students who wish to receive support can individually contact their local education (support) office or the last school they attended, or receive support through their current alternative education institution or an out-of-school youth support center. Detailed information is available on the websites of the metropolitan and provincial offices of education.

No Jin-young, Director of Student Support at the Ministry of Education, stated, “This textbook support initiative will serve as an opportunity to protect the right to education of out-of-school youth and to robustly guarantee their learning opportunities,” adding, “We will continue to expand support so that out-of-school youth can continue their learning.”
