NYT: "Xi Jinping Succeeds in Overturning Trump's Hardline Policy on China"
WP: "China Aimed to Build an 'Equal Superpower' Image at the Summit"
The New York Times (NYT) assessed on May 15 (local time) that President Xi Jinping succeeded in overturning President Donald Trump's hardline stance on China on the occasion of the U.S.-China summit.
The NYT analyzed that this summit clearly demonstrated how President Trump abandoned the hostile approach he had maintained toward China from his first term through the early part of his second term, and how significantly he has shifted the foundation of U.S. policy toward China.

In contrast, President Trump did not present a clear position on the Taiwan issue, one of the 'flashpoints' in U.S.-China relations, while in Beijing.
Even though President Xi pressed the United States by warning that "if the Taiwan issue is mishandled, the two countries could come into conflict," President Trump avoided making any specific remarks regarding Taiwan.
The Washington Post (WP), another major U.S. daily, interpreted that President Xi's goal for this summit was to project the image of an 'equal superpower.' The newspaper noted that this revealed a dynamic China has long sought and the United States has long resisted.
Some analysts have pointed out that China is now aware that U.S. policy can change abruptly, and President Xi has signaled that he is tailoring his diplomatic policy to fit President Trump.
