A colored manuscript of 'Daedongyeojido', a National Registered Cultural Heritage that includes the labeling of Dokdo, will be put up for auction. Major works of Korean modern and contemporary masters such as Kim Whanki, Yoo Youngkuk, and Lee Ufan will also be featured, bringing together significant pieces of both antique and abstract art.
Seoul Auction announced on May 14 that it will hold the '192nd Art Auction' at Seoul Auction Gangnam Center at 4 p.m. on May 28. A total of 145 lots spanning modern and contemporary art, antiques, and luxury sections will be auctioned. The total low estimate stands at approximately KRW 10.3 billion.
In the antiques section, a colored manuscript of 'Daedongyeojido', based on the 1861 edition published by Kim Jeongho, will be released. It is produced in a set of 22 accordion-fold booklets, and when fully unfolded, it measures approximately 390 cm in width and 685 cm in height. The map enhances visibility through color-coding by province and marking major hubs in red, while meticulously visualizing mountain ranges, waterways, and road networks.
Notably, this item features the label 'Usan (于山)', referring to Dokdo, which is rarely found in woodblock editions. Seoul Auction explained that this work holds historical value, as it reflects the geographical understanding of the time and the map-making techniques of the late Joseon Dynasty.
In the modern and contemporary art section, Kim Whanki's 1971 work '7-Ⅲ-71' will be up for auction, with an estimated price between KRW 500 million and KRW 1 billion. This paper piece, created during the artist's New York period, displays transitional characteristics as Kim moved toward his signature all-over dot painting style. The blue tones and repetitive arrangement of dots exemplify the flow of his late abstract works.
Yoo Youngkuk's 1978 work 'Work' will also be seeking a new owner. Reconstructing mountains and sky into geometric planes such as triangles and rectangles, this piece embodies the artist's representative visual language of reducing the essence of nature to abstract order. Lee Ufan's 'Dialogue' is estimated at KRW 700 million to KRW 1.2 billion, Damien Hirst's 'Beautiful, Camp, Sinbad Lozenge Painting (Potatoes)' at KRW 120 million to KRW 350 million, and Lee Mokha's 'Chromakey Blue' at KRW 100 million to KRW 150 million.
A collection of photographs and materials related to Han Heesoon, the last court lady of the Korean Empire and the first official holder of court cuisine skills in the Joseon royal court, as well as a set of seven photographs documenting the activities of the Cheondogyo Youth Party during the Japanese occupation, will also be up for auction.

The auction preview exhibition will be held at Seoul Auction Gangnam Center from May 15 through the auction day on May 28. The exhibition is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with free admission.
